The Kitchen – The Center Of Action – is located in Margareten, at Bacherplatz and emerged from the socio-political failure of the Migrating Kitchen. The attempt to transform a catering company into a cooperative is unfortunately not feasible at the moment. Migrating Kitchen, which emerged from an artistic intervention in the Lugner City – the Charity Gala – was a catering company (2016 to 2018) an attempt to
to translate emancipation and integration into an economy of solidarity. Gastarbeiter*innen, Refugees and Austrians*innen which decide together on plays – as well as on company foundation.
On the one hand – precarious as all, and additionally marginalized, not entitled to vote and nevertheless in the middle – the local became a place of daily production, performances – in public space, lecture performances at Austrian universities, invitations to festivals at home and abroad followed. Currently, a new production context has been established, also and not only as an expression of artistic solidarity and an affinity to collective artistic and political subjects.
Thus Tuesdays are used for public meetings, plenas and cooking classes, and Fridays for public events and actions. The park outside the door is regularly the site of festivals, picnics, and performances (such as the 2017 Wiener Festwochen with Jodi Dean). Here, the successful neighborly, social self-organization is thematized and continued. Bacherplatz was occupied for several months in 2012. It was the site of the first successful citizens‘ initiative in Austria after Hainburg – from which Action 21 emerged.
„The Kitchen – Center of Action“, is a „space of joint struggle“. It is a union of different initiatives: Boem* – a group of activists who have realized projects with marginalized groups, people with DownSyndrome, veterans of the Yugoslav wars, sex workers. Migrating Kitchen – a catering company that strived for a participatory solidary economy with refugees. Blind Date Collaboration – an open group that deals with social, site-specific and contextual issues through an artistic and interdisciplinary approach in various formats (from urban interventions to publications). Olympionik*innen Productions – the producer duo of Alisa Beck and Marie-Christin Rissinger, working in the fields of theater, film, music and urban practice. Also meeting at the Kitchen is the Prisoners‘ Union – a solidarity group fighting to improve prison conditions. Changes for Women – an association that campaigns for better legal conditions for women in the case of abortions. As well as individuals from the environment of the Bacherplatz occupation in 2005 and the Refugee protests, and other activist groups that use the space at short notice, such as SOS Balkanroute, ARGE Räume, Margareten gegen Rechts, Moneyfesta, Roma initiatives and many more.
