BOEM* – Newspaper, circulation 40,000 copies, supplement in *Augustin*, Vienna 2012
Friends and foes!
Supporters and obstructers!
Dear readers!
For us, tradition defines the community. In our case – our state, the one that celebrates its daughters and sons alongside domes and fields. Access to our exclusive community is precious, and can only be granted through authorised intermediaries. Anyone wishing to sell citizenship as part of a business deal will be punished. In the factory of Austrian identity, Kurz is responsible for quality control and Scheuch for the black market.
And passports are the metaphorical redistribution of the social contract to many. They grant the right to cross borders at varying speeds. ‘DEATH TO FASCISM’ is, unfortunately, not a fundamental consensus in the Republic of Austria. Nor does anti-fascism have a long-established tradition.
Tradition constitutes community. Many are and will be excluded. When it comes to housing and employment, the passport is useless. Arbitrariness seeks out its lodger, its work colleague. It throws the stranger off the bus. There is a backlog in the field of politics. Representation interests us as much as human rights interest Josef Fritzl. In our little world, the war continues to have an effect. It is not over. Nobody calls it that. And although it is far away, it has an effect right here amongst us.
Nevertheless, the centre is in Ottakring. Beer and schnapps loosen hands and tongues. There is dancing, singing, painting, agitating, debating, archiving and analysing. Bellies burst with laughter more often than eyebrows from blows. The traditional drink, café, costs 2 euros in the form of a melange. A melange with caffeine is the concoction that fills the Viennese with pride. We blend the contributions of our guests, workers and collaborators to create art. The exhibition opens on 3 October at 7.00 pm at KOPPSTRASSE 26. We’ve included vouchers for other events because we still think you’re brilliant; and we are you.
Although the newspaper is written in German, many languages are spoken at BOEM*. Here, the working class and the educated middle class mix. Our first newspaper begins and ends with a greeting once commonly used in Vienna.
To “smrt fašizmu”, tens of thousands of Viennese replied – “sloboda narodu”. We want a new tradition in this CITY.
Death to fascism
Freedom for the people
